WELCOME TO THE VIRTUAL POSE ® VINTAGE COLLECTION

We are very excited about bringing professional and student artists alike the restored version of the first-ever Virtual Pose ® collection originally produced in 1998.

This elegant series of poses was shot on 35 mm B&W film and produced at a time when computers boasted far less processing power by today's standards. The direct impact of that unavoidable technical hurdle made for QTVR movies at a far smaller resolution than originally intended.

I will never forget the moment when my dear friend and mentor, Dr. Gregory Scott Wills, the CD-ROM's producer, contacted me with the bad news and said: "Even the fastest processors we have in our lab are brought to their knees. I am afraid you have to choose between a high resolution image that the artist will practically never be able to rotate smoothly on the screen, or the alternative..."

Given the time, energy, and expense that already had gone into the project — let alone being able to find the first-ever Virtual Pose (VP) models who perfectly matched the tone of the project — I couldn't, in good conscience, postpone the release of the product until computers caught up with us! Besides, in the "real" world of publishing, business, and cash flow, the catalogs had already been printed and the distribution channels were expecting a product to be delivered on time.

I therefore made a judgment call and asked Greg to downgrade the resolution, hoping that the artists would welcome this new approach to studying the human figure.

"And why wouldn't they?" I wondered.

My perhaps reckless optimism was fueled by the fact that my own private library was filled with visual reference books that offered images of a comparable size, namely the "Pose" collection by Elte Shuppan. Therefore, I took a gamble on the notion that artists would welcome having an image of an equal size — except that in the case of VP, they would be able to rotate it a full 360 degrees right onscreen. Plus, and lest we forget, the majority of the computer monitors of the day still supported resolutions as low as 640x480 pixels!

But more than anything, I put my faith in the fact that my fellow artists would see this project for what it truly is: a labor of love born out of the all-too-familiar passion —obsession even — for interpreting the human figure.

Over the course of the decade that followed the introduction of VP 1, many events would overshadow this unique collection which — ironically — paved the way for everything else that followed.

And it might have taken years for us to finally bring you this collection as it was originally meant to be appreciated. But I dare say the wait was worth it!

Anyone who purchases Virtual Pose ® through our online store (the ONLY authorized seller of the Virtual Pose ® online collection) and downloads them, is therefore granted a license to produce and sell original artwork that may closely resemble the photographic images presented in the Virtual Pose ® QTVR movies ("The Poses").

(In other words, the Poses are NOT "Royalty Free" and you must treat the virtual models as you would real models: using their photographs without permission is prohibited. However, you may create art based upon the poses. Feel free to draw, paint, and sculpt them as closely as possible to the original images. However, you cannot use the actual "pixels" from the photographs.)
